United Way to Focus on Schools for Recovery Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 6, 2017

United Way to Focus on Schools for Recovery Month

Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way’s Behavioral Health and Addiction Impact Council, along with several community partners, will focus their efforts bringing educational programming related to addiction issues to area school districts. A nationally known initiative through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, names the month of September as “Recovery Month" in an effort to increase awareness of mental and substance abuse and celebrate those who recover.

“It’s a built-in time of year to highlight successes in recovery and address stigma related to all forms of mental health and addiction in our communities,” says Joanne Troutman, President/CEO of GSV United Way. “We wanted to make information easily accessible for kids and their families,” she adds.

Sponsored by Geisinger Health Plan (GHP), presentations will be brought into six area school districts for a visually stimulating school assembly produced by DJ Choices. The presentation will feature local speakers in recovery who will share their stories. Volunteers and students will also provide resources for families at Friday night football games, along with free “I support Recovery” t-shirts, and public service announcements throughout the game.

“Fourteen Pennsylvanians die each day from opioid overdose. One way to address this epidemic is by education about the risks and the treatment options available to individuals with opiate use disorder,” says Perry Meadows, Medical Director of Geisinger Health Plan. “The materials we distribute at the assemblies and football games may provide the information needed to save a life. If we save one life, then our efforts are a success”.

Resources will be made available at the following football games after in-school assemblies on the following dates:

  • Selinsgrove Area School District @ Selinsgrove – Sept. 8
  • Mifflinburg Area School District @ Mifflinburg – Sept. 15
  • Lewisburg Area School District @ Bucknell University – Sept. 29
  • Shikellamy School District @ Shikellamy – Oct. 27
  • Mount Carmel vs. Shamokin @ Mount Carmel - Oct 27

In-school assemblies will also take place at both Mount Carmel and Shamokin Area School Districts, in partnership with the Lower Anthracite Region United Way.
